"May went out with a bang Tuesday as thunderstorms whipped the area with
large hail, torrential rain and at least one tornado.

At 3:10 p.m., trained weather watchers and others spotted a tornado near
the intersection of Interstate 40 and Lakeside Drive, the National Weather
Service said.

The funnel touched ground, but no major damage was reported. However, four
homes a few miles from the site of the tornado reportedly lost all the
windows on their north sides, possibly from golfball-size hail that hit
around the same time, the NWS reported.

Thick fog cut visibility and forced traffic to slow to a crawl. Some
drivers sought shelter underneath highway overpasses as quarter-size hail
sheeted parts of Amarillo.

The largest hail reported to the NWS was baseball-size hail seen by
firefighters six miles east of Hereford."
